Elevate Your Space

With a custom timber frame from Sound Structures

My name is Cai MacDonald, owner of Sound Structures.

I started this business to combine my love for making high quality lumber on my sawmill and my passion for crafting beautiful structures. I enjoy working with my customers to dream and design the structure that is a perfect fit for their space. Because we start with raw materials, I am able to ensure the quality meets my standards so that when I finish installing with my crew, I am proud of the results. Give me a call today and let’s talk about your project!

Our Process

A lot goes into building something this beautiful. Luckily, we've got the process down pat.

Design

The process starts with a rough sketch or description of your dream. Then we’ll send realistic Sketchup renderings of your project. If you’re happy and ready to move forward, let the building begin!

Sawmilling

We use white pine logs sourced from local loggers and process them into lumber using our Timberking Sawmill.

Kiln Drying and Shaping

All of our Tongue and Groove roof boards are professionally kiln dried- so we know that they won’t shrink as they dry out. Then, it is run through a moulder to be processed into toungue and groove.

Preperation

Each individual timber is pre-cut, pre-drilled, and sanded. Joints are test fitted so when we get to installation, we know everything fits!

Staining

We stain the timbers in our shop. We use a high pressure sprayer to ensure proper penetration and coverage.

Installation

Our friendly crew installs the timber structures quickly and safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why white pine?

White pine grows right here in southern Ontario, it is strong and inexpensive. Outdoor structures are a great use for eastern white pine, and staining it prevents from greying (although some folks love the look of weathered white pine!)

Are your kits engineered?

Ontario building codes requires you to get a permit for any structure over 160 sqft; or bigger than 16'x10' or 12'8"x12'8". My standard sizes only go up to 12x12, so they do not require engineered plans for permit applications. Any custom projects that require permits will come with engineered drawings. It is up to you, the customer, to check with your municipality before building any structures!

What base is required?

Our kits can be installed on a variety of bases. Concrete is ideal, but we have installed on decks, docks, and sono-tubes. Before installing, we will make sure that the base is structurally sound and make any modifications if necessary.
